The Boss is Back

Before anything else, understand something: I don't speak Japanese. And another thing: I watched this episode raw. That means, no subtitles. But you know what? I didn't need a translation. I understood pretty much what was going on and even some of the humor. That's how good this episode was written and directed. Boss 2  is a direct sequel of the first season. It features the same core cast of characters, the same hi-jinx and antics, the same OP theme (performed by Superfly) and even the same story formula. Implausible plot twists and holes the size of Texas and all. But you know, this isn't a show that's to be taken seriously so I'm willing to suspend my belief for more than the required time if I'm entertained in the end. It takes place two years after the end of Boss  Season One. A flashback in the beginning of the episode shows that in the ending scene of Season One, Osawa Eriko (Amami Yuki) got an urgent call about an assassination attempt against a

Movie Review: Solanin

This is a manga turned into a live-action film. I don't really trust adaptations like this. There is always something lost along the way. It could be the expressions of the characters. Manga characters are frequently entertaining because of their exaggerated expressions, something which not many Japanese actor/actress can pull out. But despite all these initial misgivings, I decided to give Solanin  a go because I loved the manga version that much and I'm kind of a fan of Miyazaki Aoi. THE STORY Meiko, played by Miyazaki Aoi ( Nana, Tada Kimi wo Aoshiteru, Eureka ) is a young office lady who, unable to bear the mundane reality of a desk job, quits and settles into a year of lazy unemployment. Her spur-of-the-moment decision creates a domino effect as her live-in boyfriend, Taneda, begins to feel that it is now up to him to bear the burden of responsibility. He sees that his part-time job as a graphic designer doesn't pay enough to support both of them and his band, c

Lawyer Stuff, the TV kind

I just finished Season One of The Good Wife  and...it's good. Better than that. It's GREAT. I've been watching the show intermittently whenever I happen to catch it on but finally I got around to watching the entire first season which I have on DVD. It's one of the more compelling TV shows I've ever seen, and that in itself is amazing because if you look at the other titles on my watchlist ( Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, Camelot, True Blood, The Tudors ), this show is subdued. No over-the-top violence or sex, no magic or post-apocalyptic worlds....just good old politicking and grounded, organically developed characters. Also, courtroom drama, but that's like the frilly stuff, not the meat of the show. Anyway, the show is on its second season and I can hardly wait.
